Diamond Laser Scalpel
The DLS is an innovative, ultra-precise cold contact scalpel
that offers the surgeon the added benefit of simultaneous controlled
coagulation. It is manufactured from natural or synthetic diamond,
the hardest material on earth.
Unlike free beam surgical lasers and electrocautery systems, the
DLS provides the user with tactile feedback in a cutting instrument
that is 40 times sharper than any steel scalpel. Since the diamond
blade remains cold while laser energy heats tissue along the wound
edge to only coagulation temperature, collateral tissue damage is
minimized and there is less delay in revascularization. This results
in less post-operative bleeding and bruising. Swelling, redness
and scarring is also greatly reduced because unlike steel, the
ultra sharp diamond is a chemically and electrically inert substance.
The DLS Advantage
- One-hand, one-motion cutting and coagulation
- Significantly increased cutting precision
- Gentle coagulation of blood vessels and capillaries
- Reduction of tissue damage and pain
- Faster and enhanced healing
- Reduction of surgery time
- Reduction of post-operative scars
- Better surgical outcomes
- Cost-effective technology
DLS Function
The DLS gives the surgeon superior cutting speed and quality. It is designed
for use with the Fiber Guide Cable providing easy handling because of the
flexible design of the FGC. The DLS can radiate measured and controlled
amounts of laser energy that instantaneously heats the water content of
body cells up to 65 C, which then coagulates blood vessels. This results
in procedures with less blood loss, a clean and clear surgical field, and
reduced surgery time.
DLS Design
The DLS has proven in more than 15,000 surgical procedures to have a meticulous,
unparalleled cutting edge resulting in:
- Superior scalpel handling due to upper and lower edge
- Controlled incision depth with only light downward pressure
- Sensitive tactile feedback
- Clean wound edges
- Less traumatic incisions
- Less post-operative pain

DLS Cleaning and Sterilization
The DLS consists of a diamond cutting blade and titanium handle.
The instrument couples to the flexible Fiber Guide Cable that conducts the laser energy from the laser unit to the blade tip when the laser is energized through a footswitch. The entire handpiece is cleaned under warm running water and is then put into its sterilization tray for flash autoclaving. A protective cap is provided to prevent ingress of steam or water at the handpiece end. A retractable sheath at the distal end protects the diamond blade during handling, cleaning and the autoclave process.
DLS Operation
The Diamond Laser Scalpel may be used to cut and coagulate. When larger blood vessels than 0.4mm are not coagulated during the incision the flat side of the DLS tip may be applied to press down on the vessel opening and coagulate it shut. Fluence settings depend on the procedure performed, the vascularity of the incised or excised tissue, and the degree (depth) of coagulation required. It is recommend that low laser power of 5-6 Watt in CW mode be used initially and increased as required to obtain the desired results.
DLS Regulatory and Intended Use
The Diamond Laser Scalpel has regulatory approval in the USA, EU, Japan and Korea. The approved indications are for soft tissue incision and/or excision, with laser energy for coagulation or without laser energy in: neurosurgery, ophthalmology, dental and oral surgery, oto-rhino-laryngology, plastic surgery, general surgery, urology, gynecology and podiatry.
DLS Longevity
With adequate care during use, handling, cleaning and sterilization, the DLS can perform up to 200 full surgical procedures with no reduction in sharpness. The last incision on the 200th procedure is as precise as the first incision on the first procedure. Periodic services to re-sharpen or exchange the DLS are included in our flexible acquisition programs.
DLS Acquisition Programs
Our Comprehensive Acquisition Program provides unlimited use of the Diamond Laser Scalpel such as: personal in-service education training for surgeon and staff, repairs and/or exchange and re-sharpening, no down time immediate exchange option, upgrade ability when new DLS designs are introduced. All this is part of the “Knife for Life” Lease Program that includes a certain number of DLS and disposable products needed in surgery over a specific period of time to meet the needs of any customer.
